Free People's State of (1918-1933)
The Free People’s State of Württemberg emerged in 1918 from the Kingdom of Wüttermberg following the collapse of the German Empire at the end of World War I. As a constituent state of the Weimar Republic, it transitioned from a monarchy to a republican system while retaining a degree of regional identity within a unified Germany. This period lasted until the reorganization of German states under Nazi rule in 1933.
Württemberg continued to issue its own postage stamps during the early Weimar period, maintaining designs that reflected regional identity rather than imperial authority. These stamps are typically characterized by simple yet elegant typography and numerals, often emphasizing functionality over ornate design. They stand as a subtle but important representation of Germany’s shift from imperial to republican governance.
The state used the German Mark = 100 Pfennig as its currency.
