Kingdom of Burundi (1962-1966)

Burundi, a landlocked country in East Africa, gained independence from Belgium in 1962 after being administered as part of the territory of Ruanda-Urundi, becoming the Kingdom of Burundi. It soon after became a republic in 1966 after a military coup abolished the monarchy, and experienced intermittent civil wars until 2005.

Burundi has produced a colorful and varied range of postage stamps reflecting its wildlife, culture, history, and national development. Many issues feature native animals, traditional arts, important anniversaries, and international themes. The country's stamps are particularly noted for their diversity and appeal to collectors worldwide.

Burundi initially used the currencies of the Belgian-administered territory before introducing the Burundian franc after independence.

This stamp was issued shortly after Burundi's independence on 1 July 1962 and consists of a pre-existing wildlife stamp overprinted "Royaume du Burundi" ("Kingdom of Burundi"). The underlying design depicts two African bush elephants (Loxodonta africana), engraved by Jean van Noten and originally produced during the final years of Belgian administration.The overprint marks the transition from colonial rule to an independent Burundian state under the monarchy of Mwami Mwambutsa IV.
