Finland

Finland, located in Northern Europe, was part of the Swedish realm for centuries before becoming an autonomous Grand Duchy under the Russian Empire in 1809. It declared independence in 1917 amidst the upheaval of the Russian Revolution and subsequently developed into a stable democratic republic known for its strong institutions and a high standard of living.

Finland has produced a distinctive and highly respected range of postage stamps. Early issues reflected Russian influences, while later stamps embraced Finnish national symbols, landscapes, architecture, and design traditions. Finnish stamps are particularly admired for their clean aesthetics, innovative printing techniques, and strong emphasis on art and nature.

The country used the Finnish markka = 100 pennies from 1860 until the adoption of the Euro in 2002.

This stamp honours one of the occupations that helped build modern Finland: log driving, the transport of timber by river from inland forests to sawmills and ports. It depicts two floaters balancing on a moving raft of logs while using long pike poles to guide the timber downstream, a skill that demanded strength, agility, and constant awareness of the river's currents.Before the widespread use of trucks and forest roads, Finland's vast network of lakes and rivers served as the country's principal timber highways. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, millions of logs were floated each year, making log driving a vital part of the Finnish economy and one of the defining seasonal occupations of rural life.Designed by Olavi Vepsäläinen, the stamp captures the movement and physical effort involved in the work. The monochrome engraving style gives the scene the appearance of a historical illustration, fitting for a subject already becoming part of Finland's industrial heritage by the time the stamp was issued in 1963. As mechanised transport expanded during the following decades, traditional log driving gradually declined, making stamps such as this an important visual record of a once-essential profession.

This stamp belongs to Finland's long-running Coat of Arms 1975 (Vahtero Design) definitive series, introduced in 1975 and used for everyday postal needs for more than three decades. Designed by Pirkko Vahtero, the series presents a highly stylized version of the Finnish coat of arms: the crowned lion wielding a sword while trampling a curved sabre, a heraldic emblem dating back to the 16th century.The lion and the nine heraldic roses shown within the shield derive from the historic arms of the Grand Duchy of Finland and remain central symbols of Finnish statehood. One interesting feature of this issue is its longevity. This stamp was issued as part of the Norden 1980 joint Nordic issue, an annual programme through which the Nordic countries highlighted shared aspects of their cultural heritage. The Finnish contribution depicts a richly decorated breast harness from Ylistaro, a municipality in western Finland known for its strong folk traditions.The ornament shown is a piece of traditional horse equipment used in ceremonial and festive contexts. Finely carved and painted harness decorations such as this were a source of local pride, particularly in Ostrobothnia, where elaborate horse trappings were displayed at weddings, church journeys, and community celebrations. The bright red colouring and floral motifs reflect the region's distinctive folk-art style.Designed by Pirkko Vahtero, the stamp focuses closely on the object itself, allowing its craftsmanship and symmetry to take centre stage. Although small, the harness represents a broader tradition of Nordic rural artistry, making it an appropriate subject for the Norden series devoted to traditional handicrafts. Like many Finnish commemoratives of the period, it remained valid for postage until the end of 2011.
