Greece, located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, is the heir to one of the world’s most influential ancient civilizations. After centuries under Ottoman rule, it regained independence in the 19th century and developed into a modern nation-state. Its history has been shaped by periods of monarchy, republic, war, and democratic renewal.

Greece has produced a rich and highly collectible range of postage stamps. Early issues are famous for the iconic “Large Hermes Heads,” among the classic stamps of the 19th century, while later designs celebrated Greek history, mythology, archaeology, and cultural achievements. Greek stamps are particularly admired for their artistic quality and strong connection to the country’s ancient heritage.

The country used the Greek drachma = 100 lepta for most of its modern history before adopting the euro in 2002.

This stamp depicts the Samaria Gorge in southwestern Crete, one of the most famous natural landmarks in Greece. Carved by a river through the White Mountains (Lefka Ori), the gorge stretches approximately 16 kilometres and is among the longest in Europe.This stamp portrays the most dramatic section of the gorge, the Iron Gates (Sideroportes), where the rock walls rise to heights of around 300 metres while narrowing to only a few metres apart. Samaria is the centerpiece of the Samaria National Park, established in 1962 to protect the region's unique flora and fauna. The park played an important role in preserving the endangered Cretan wild goat, or kri-kri, a species found almost nowhere else in the world.During the Second World War, the gorge served as an escape route for Allied soldiers and resistance fighters moving between the mountains of Crete and the island's southern coast. In his 3rd-century BC treatise, Aristarchus used geometric reasoning and observations of the Moon's phases to calculate celestial relationships. Although his numerical results were inaccurate because of observational limitations, his method was scientifically rigorous and centuries ahead of its time.Aristarchus is best known today for proposing a heliocentric model in which the Earth revolved around the Sun. Over the following decades, firefighting remained fragmented between municipal authorities, police forces, and military formations.A major reform came in 1929–30 when the government sought to create a centralized national service.
