Commonwealth of Dominica

The Commonwealth of Dominica is an island nation in the eastern Caribbean that gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1978. Known as the "Nature Island of the Caribbean," it is renowned for its lush rainforests, volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, and well-preserved natural environment.

Dominica has produced a colorful and widely collected range of postage stamps. This stamp depicts Emerald Pool, one of Dominica's best-known natural attractions, located within Morne Trois Pitons National Park. The secluded pool is fed by a narrow waterfall cascading through dense tropical rainforest, creating a clear emerald-green basin surrounded by moss-covered rocks and lush vegetation. Easily accessible by a short forest trail, Emerald Pool has long been one of the island's most visited scenic sites and later became part of Dominica's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated in 1997.Issued on 12 February 1981 as part of the Dominica Safari series, the stamp was one of a set promoting the island's landscapes and tourism. The series showcased some of Dominica's most recognisable natural attractions, helping establish a distinctive visual identity for the island's tourist promotion through its postage stamps during the early 1980s.

This stamp commemorates the 80th birthday of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (1900–2002), celebrated on 4 August 1980. Born Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, she became Queen Consort following the accession of her husband, King George VI, in 1936, and was widely admired for her public role during the Second World War. This stamp formed part of a Commonwealth-wide programme marking the Queen Mother's milestone birthday. Unlike many royal commemoratives that simply reproduce formal portraits, this design incorporates a contemporary photographic image within an ornate decorative frame.
