DDR (1949-90)
The German Democratic Republic (GDR), or East Germany, was established in 1949 within the Soviet occupation zone following World War II. Governed as a socialist state aligned with the Eastern Bloc, it developed under a centrally planned system until its dissolution and reunification with West Germany in 1990.
The GDR produced a prolific and visually distinctive range of postage stamps. Issues frequently highlighted socialist ideals, industrial progress, scientific achievements, and notable cultural figures, alongside international themes. Known for their sharp printing and bold compositions, East German stamps were widely collected and often issued in extensive thematic series.
The country used the East German Mark = 100 Pfennig as its currency.
